Tropical Rose is proud to present to it’s first offering, a promising three year old colt named Tropical Cognac. We wanted our initial offering for the Tropical Rose group to be a special horse and we feel that this colt is the one. It’s important for us to not only be a successful racing operation but because of our stated mission of helping women, we were quite particular in choosing a horse that we really believed in.
Tropical Cognac is a three year old colt who was born in the state of Florida making him eligible for the FOA program (Florida owners allowance awards) which is bonus money given to registered Florida breds that finish first, second or third in races at Gulfstream Park or Tampa Bay Downs. He is also eligible to race in the Sunshine Millions which is a lucrative day of stakes races for Florida breds held annually at Gulfstream Park.
Tropical Cognac is by the graded stakes winning son of leading sire Smart Strike, Pleasant Strike. Pleasant Strike was owned and campaigned by his breeder, the late Edward Evans who was one of the leading owners and breeders in North America over the last fifty years. Trained by the multiple eclipse award winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Pleasant Strike broke his maiden in the 4th start of his career at Gulfstream Park over the grass at the distance of 1 ⅛ by eight lengths. That summer he won his first stakes race capturing the grade 3 Arlington Classic on the turf at Arlington Park also at 1 ⅛. After a spotty four year old season with only a single allowance win to his credit, Pleasant Strike won the Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs in the late spring of his five year old season. He then went on a sustained streak of consistently good efforts as he hit the board in eight consecutive stakes races, all on the turf at various racetracks throughout North America including Monmouth Park, the Meadowlands, Churchill Downs and Calder. Pleasant Strike concluded his racing career with six wins from thirty six starts with fourteen 2nd and 3rd’s, earning $455203.
Pleasant Strike entered stud at Northwest Farms in Ocala in 2015. From three crops to race he has sired the winners of 17 races including champion three year old filly in Venezuela, Graciele Mia.
Tropical Cognac’s dam is an Eltish mare named Brandy Brandy. While Brandy Brady did not have much racing success she has a quality pedigree being a full sister to graded stakes winner and stakes placed producer, Barbara O’Brien. They are in turn out of a Desert Wine mare named Brandy O’Brien who also produced a half-sister to them, Beright, who is a graded stakes producer having been the dam Principle Secret who captured the grade 2 Best Pal stakes at Del Mar.
Tropical Cognac’s third dam is a stakes winning and producing mare named Irish O'Brien who is the dam of the highly successful Blaze O’Brien who earned close to a million dollars while winning thirteen lifetime races including a grade 3 race at Hollywood Park.
Tropical Cognac who is inbred 5 x 5 to the great Northern Dancer has speed influences in his pedigree through his Mr Prospector sire line. He also has plenty of stamina influences via Pleasant Colony, also on his sires side and through Desert Wine on his dam’s side. Desert Wine was the runner up in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1983. His sire Pleasant Strike was most effective going a route of ground on the grass and the most successful runner in his immediate female family, Barbara O’Brien was a graded stakes winning sprinter on the dirt. Tropical Cognac has a very versatile pedigree mix which means that he should have many distance and surface options for his trainer to choose from during his racing career.
