Fans of dual classic winner Sovereignty will have a lot to celebrate this week. It was announced that the three-year-old colt, who ended his sophomore season with four consecutive wins in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1), Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun (G2), and DraftKings Travers Stakes (G1), will stay in training as a four-year-old. The Godolphin homebred will remain with trainer Bill Mott.
Knightsbridge Wins Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) in Gate-to-Wire Gulfstream Triumph
The final weekend of 2025 saw the success of another Godolphin homebred conditioned by Mott: Knightsbridge. On Saturday, Dec. 27, the four-year-old Nyquist colt delivered a gate-to-wire victory in fine style in the Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream PArk. This performance bodes well for his five-year-old season, and it’s no surprise, given his connections, that his pedigree oozes class. Knightsbridge is a half-brother to 2022 Carter Handicap (G1) winner Speakers Corner (by Street Sense); the pair’s granddam is 2006 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner Round Pond.
Hiding in Honduras Captures Mathis Mile (G2T) as Nysos Shines at Santa Anita
On Sunday, Dec. 28, Hiding in Honduras registered his first stakes win, taking the Mathis Mile Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park on Opening Day. A son of the under-the-radar but versatile Kentucky stallion Dialed In (whose runners in 2025 range from six-furlong star Whatchatalkinabout to 12.5-furlong veteran Onesmoothoperator), Hiding in Honduras surged late to just get up for the win. Next up was the Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes (G2), won by Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) victor Nysos. This was another nailbiting win for Team Nysos.
Usha Dominates La Brea Stakes (G1) as Goal Oriented Claims Malibu (G1)
The seven-furlong, $300,000 La Brea Stakes presented by Don Julio (G1) went to a daughter of red-hot sire Tiz the Law (who sired two graded stakes winners Nov. 8 at Aqueduct, including subsequent grade 3 winner Fully Subscribed). The three-year-old filly in question, Usha, positively dominated her competitors in the La Brea, skipping home clear by 5 ¼ lengths. Usha’s female family isn’t particularly distinguished, until you come to her fifth dam, Added Attraction, third dam of Montjoy (a multiple group 1-placed group winner in France and England and grade 3 winner in America), and grade 1-placed Alyten; Added Attraction is also the fourth dam of 2000 Flower Bowl Invitational Handicap (G1) winner Colstar and fifth dam of several group winners in South Africa. The La Brea’s counterpart for sophomore colts and geldings, the Malibu Stakes (G1), went to Goal Oriented; after struggling on the Triple Crown trail earlier this year, he ran sixth to Nysos in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and is now finally emerging as a blossoming talent in his own right. The son of leading sire Not This Time is out of multiple graded stakes winner Bizzy Caroline (by Afleet Alex), herself a product of Catesby Clay’s historic Runnymede Farm.
Cabo Spirit Wins San Gabriel (G3T) as Ambaya Takes American Oaks (G1)
Cabo Spirit took the San Gabriel Stakes (G3T) over 1 ⅛ miles. The six-year-old gelding has consistently shown up in graded stakes year after year, most recently annexing the American Stakes (G3T), also at Santa Anita. His granddam, grade 2 winner Tizdubai, is a full sister to two-time Horse of the Year and leading sire Tiznow and veteran campaigner Budroyale.
The crowning glory of the day’s card was the American Oaks presented by Cygames (G1) for three-year-old fillies, held over 1 ¼ miles and offering a purse of $300,000. Japanese-born, Canadian-based jockey Kazushi Kimura rode Ambaya to a half-length triumph in the race; a homebred for accomplished owner/breeder George Strawbridge Jr., the daughter of Ghostzapper is a maternal granddaughter of multiple turf graded stakes winner J’ray.
